Nanda Devi National Park (World Heritage Site)

Spread over an area of 630 sq. km., adjacent to the NandaDevi Peak, is the Nanda Devi National Park. It was established in 1980. The park area can be approached from Joshimath or Nandprayag in Chamoli district. A difficult trek has to be negotiated to reach this National Park. A unique mix of flora and fauna is characteristic of this park. The fauna includes the Brown and Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahr, Snowleopards, Serow and Chir pheasants.

The amazing variety of flora and fauna, set amidst largely unspoiled environs has made this one of the great Biosphere Reserves of the world. The jewel in it's midst is Nanda Devi, which at 7817 m may not be the highest, but has been described by mountaineers as the most beautiful mountain peak in the world. Lately, the Sanctuary zone has been closed to trekkers as successive expeditions took an unsustainable toll of the flora and environs and left behind debris which was sought to be cleared by a recent expedition mounted by the Garhwal Rifles Regiment in 2001.
